Eating produce in season

Updated: Feb 1, 2019

Do you know that produce has a season? Do you know that you're not supposed to eat fresh produce if it is not in season? The month of September includes; Acorn squash, apples, beets, butternut squash, cantaloupe, cauliflower, eggplant, figs, grapes, green beans, lettuce, mangoes, mushrooms, peppers, persimmons, pomegranates, pumpkins, spinach, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, and tomatoes. Out of that list how many of them are you eating and how many items are you eating that is not on this list? I can tell you that there are 8 of them on that list that I’m currently eating. And a few that aren’t on this list that I buy organic and frozen.

Why don’t you eat produce that isn’t in season? Well first, the fruits and veggies that aren’t in season are going to be preserved in some kind of way, in order to continue selling them year round. Do you know what that means? When a fruit or vegetable need to be preserved, additives are added to the produce like; pesticides, waxes and or other chemicals. It also most likely is put in a refrigerator/freezer to make the produce last even longer. The non-organic items already have the chemicals on them, do you want even more to be on them. This type of produce is no longer healthy for you. Your body is then fighting itself just to protect itself from the chemicals. Ever notice how some produce isn't available when not in season? For example; can you find pumpkins? Most likely know, because there really isn't a way to preserve this produce as a whole. But you can find Apples all year around, they are extremely easy to preserve.

All those chemicals affect your body in a way that sometimes they can not recover. Some people might be able to break down that produce even in that state but why, when you can simply eat the produce in season. If you really want certain produce, just buy it organic and frozen when not in season. This prevents any chemicals being added to the produce and most importantly, prevents your body from fighting itself. If your body is fighting itself, this means you can get very ill and develop immune system issues. And for the people who already have a suppressed immune system, this can really affect you. For me personally, when I have fruits that are not in season, I usually have an allergic reaction to the pesticides and began to have a swollen tongue or a rash somewhere on my body. There is plenty of produce out of season to buy organic and frozen and most times the cost isn't much higher. There are supermarkets that sell these items and are affordable. Unfortunately, you will have to put in the work and shop around. In Florida, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and other states, Aldi’s is a great supermarket for items like this.
