Do you know that your child can have an allergic reaction to amoxicillin and even a steroid based medication? My son recently was treated by a walk-in clinic for a double ear infection that he was suffering from for at least 3 days prior to. I tried all the natural homeopathic remedies that I’ve used in the past but nothing was working and it was getting worse. He was in so much pain, so I decided it was time to get him checked out. Well, his normal physician who is a holistic doctor couldn’t see him, so I took him to the nearest physician. That was a big mistake. Jonathan was first was treated with amoxicillin, which is normally fine for most kids but we weren’t aware that he was allergic to penicillin because he has NEVER had any medications EVER. Then I had to bring him back to the same urgent care for the allergic reaction because I was too scared to drive 1 hour to his physician. The urgent care treated his allergic reaction with Benadryl which is fine but then made a very large mistake and place him on a steroid based antibiotic called Azithromycin, to replace the amoxicillin. I was so worried about him that my mind wasn’t clear and gave him that antibiotic without researching it. My mistake I admit, but the urgent care made a BIGGER mistake.
According to uofmhealth.org when having a reaction to amoxicillin you should never prescribe this specific medication called AZITHROMYCIN. Due to possibly having a secondary reaction to the antibiotic. “MICHIGAN MEDICINE OF UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN” state's “You also should not take this medicine if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to certain antibiotics, including azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-Pak), erythromycin, telithromycin, amoxicillin or other penicillins (ampicillin, Amoxil, Augmentin, Trimox, and others), or cephalosporins (Duricef, Keflex, Spectracef, and others).” On top of this statement, my son’s primary care physician, Dr. Franz Cornelia states “you should never get prescribed a steroid based antibiotic when having a reaction to amoxicillin because you aren't 100% aware of what the patient is actually feeling because he is only 17 months old and he can't tell you what he feels like.” “And a steroid based antibiotic has a tendency of causing a secondary reaction.” I stated “why would they prescribe this medication if that was possible?" and Dr. Franz stated, “because they are idiots and don’t keep up on current research, I’m sure he wasn’t the only one with this reaction to this drug.”
If I can be completely honest, I was not informed about the percentage of patients that have had a reaction to a steroid based antibiotic. It's actually more popular then I would have ever guessed, about 10 percent of patients have this same reaction. That's a lot of people. His reaction included; elevated hives that were very large and swollen limbs. His throat didn't swell from my understanding and he was extremely irritable. I would always recommend trying homeopathic remedies before using medication but sometimes your child can’t fight that illness. When prescribed please research what you are taking, don't let your judgment get cloudy as I did. I know some of the medications out there but I don't know all and this was one I should have looked up before putting my son through another reaction. According to his physician and google research, medications will stay in his system up to 3 weeks and he will continue to suffer until it is gone. The homeopathic remedies that his doctor prescribed will help during this process and his body can finally be completely clear of any medication. You should always detox your body after taking antibiotics or amoxicillin. Your body needs to be pushed into reboot mode.
